Rotation vs Flipping
These do different things:
Rotation spins the image around its center. Like turning a piece of paper on a desk.
Flipping creates a mirror image. Horizontal flip swaps left and right sides. Vertical flip swaps top and bottom.
For fixing orientation, rotation is usually what you need. Flipping changes the image in more fundamental ways — text would read backwards, for example.
Common Situations
Phone photos displaying sideways — The phone's orientation sensor didn't record correctly. Rotate 90° to fix.
Scanned documents upside down — Rotate 180°.
Creating design mirror effects — Horizontal flip creates symmetry or specific visual effects.
Correcting reversed photos — Front-facing camera selfies are sometimes flipped horizontally. Some people prefer them flipped back.
The Metadata Thing
Some images look wrong in certain viewers but right in others. This often comes down to orientation metadata.
Digital photos contain embedded information about how they should be displayed. Some software reads this; some ignores it.
Actual rotation changes the pixel data itself, not just the metadata. The result displays correctly everywhere.
